Stacking Discounts

When multiple discounts are applied, they are typically calculated sequentially, not additively. A 20% off then 10% off is not 30% off — it's actually 28% off (100% × 0.80 × 0.90 = 72% of original price).

What is the Discount Calculator?

The Discount Calculator allows shoppers to quickly determine the final sale price of an item after a percentage markdown is applied. It is perfect for Black Friday shopping and clearance events.

How It Works (Formula)

The calculator executes a negative percentage change. It converts the discount percentage into a decimal, multiplies it by the original price to find the total "savings" amount, and subtracts those savings from the original price tag.

$$ \text{Final Price} = \text{Original Price} \times \left(1 - \frac{\text{Discount \%}}{100}\right) $$

The algebraic algorithm for retail markdowns.

How to Use It

Enter the original price of the item. Enter the discount percentage (e.g., 20% off). The tool will output the exact amount of money you saved, and the final price you will pay at the register.
