What is the Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS) Converter?

The DMS Converter is a critical geographic tool used by navigators and mapmakers. It translates traditional map coordinates (Degrees, Minutes, Seconds) into the flat decimal degrees required by modern GPS systems like Google Maps.

How It Works (Formula)

Like a clock, a geographic Degree contains 60 Minutes, and a Minute contains 60 Seconds. To calculate decimal degrees, the tool divides the Minutes by 60, divides the Seconds by 3,600, and adds them to the base Degree.

$$ DD = D + \frac{M}{60} + \frac{S}{3600} $$

How to Use It

You can convert bi-directionally. Enter DMS ($D^\circ M' S''$) to output flat Decimal Degrees, or enter Decimal Degrees to unpack them into DMS. This is essential for inputting old nautical maps into modern GPS software.
