What is the BTU/hr to Tons Converter?
The BTU/hr to Refrigeration Tons converter scales up thermodynamic measurements. If a contractor knows the total heating load of a massive commercial building in BTUs, they use this tool to determine how many physical "Tons" of rooftop AC units they must purchase.
How It Works (Formula)
The physics here relies on a perfectly fixed historical constant. Exactly 12,000 British Thermal Units are equal to one Ton of refrigeration capacity. Therefore, the calculator simply divides the total inputted BTUs by 12,000.
$$ P_{(\text{RT})} = \frac{P_{(\text{BTU/hr})}}{12,000} $$
The division algorithm for commercial HVAC sizing.
How to Use It
Enter the total cooling load of the structure in BTU/hr (e.g., 60,000 BTUs). The tool will divide that number by the 12,000 constant and output the required AC capacity in Tons. In this case, exactly a 5-Ton unit.
