The Final Grade Formula
Have you wondered what score you need on your final exam to pass your class or save your grade? Calculating this manually is quite simple. The calculator resolves the standard weighted class grade average formula:
The Formula
Final Exam Grade = [Desired Grade - Current Grade × (100% - Weight)] / Weight
Manual Calculation Example
Imagine your **Current Grade** is **80%**, you want to get an **85% (Desired Grade)** in the class, and your final exam counts for **25% (Weight)** of your grade:
- Determine the non-final exam portion of your class grade: `100% - 25% = 75%` (or `0.75`).
- Multiply current grade by non-final portion: `80% × 0.75 = 60%`.
- Subtract that value from your desired grade: `85% - 60% = 25%`.
- Divide this remaining percentage by the final exam weight: `25% / 0.25 = 100%`.
- You will need exactly **100%** on the final exam to finish with an 85% class grade!
What is the Final Grade Calculator?
The Final Grade Calculator helps students strategically plan their studying. It instantly computes exactly what percentage score you need to achieve on your final exam in order to secure a specific overall class grade.
How It Works (Formula)
The tool uses inverse weighted averages. It takes the grade you *want*, subtracts the "points" you have already earned from your current grade, and divides the remainder by the "weight" (percentage) of the upcoming final exam.
$$ F = \frac{G_{\text{target}} - G_{\text{current}} \times (1 - w)}{w} $$
The equation used to find the required final exam score.
How to Use It
Enter your Current Class Grade (like 85%). Enter your Target Class Grade (like 90%). Enter the Weight of the Final Exam (like 20%). The calculator will instantly tell you if it's mathematically possible, and exactly what score you need on the test.
