Final Grade Calculation
The Mathematics of Grade Calculation
Calculating your final class grade is fundamentally a matter of finding a **weighted average**. In school courses, the class grades consist of the **current coursework** (e.g. 80% weight) and the **final exam** (e.g. 20% weight).
The Core Formula
The standard grade calculation is represented by this formula:
Final Grade = (Current Grade × Coursework Weight) + (Final Exam × Final Exam Weight)
Worked Example
Suppose you currently hold an **88%** in the course before taking the final exam, and the final exam represents **15%** of the entire class mark:
- The coursework weight is `100% - 15% = 85%` (or `0.85`).
- Multiply the coursework: `88 × 0.85 = 74.8`.
- Suppose you score a **92%** on the final exam: `92 × 0.15 = 13.8`.
- Add the two components together: `74.8 + 13.8 = 88.6%`.
- Your final overall course grade is **88.6%**.

What is Final Grade Calculation?
Final Grade Calculation is the anxiety-reducing process of figuring out exactly what score you need to get on your upcoming final exam in order to pass the class or achieve your desired letter grade.
How It Works (Formula)
The math uses algebraic isolation. If your Target Grade is $T$, your Current Grade is $C$, and the Final Exam Weight is $W$, the formula solves for the Final Exam Score ($F$) by reversing the standard weighted average equation.
$$ \text{Final Score} = \frac{\text{Target} - (1 - \text{Weight}) \times \text{Current}}{\text{Weight}} $$
Algebraically isolates the required final exam score.
How to Use It
Input your current overall class grade (e.g., 82%). Then, input the target grade you want to achieve (e.g., 90% for an A). Finally, input how much the final exam is worth (e.g., 30%). The calculator will tell you the exact score you need on the test.
