Grade Calculation
How Grades are Averaged
Depending on your teacher's syllabus, course grades are computed as either a **simple average** or a **weighted average**. Understanding both will help you keep track of your grades successfully.
1. Simple Grade Average
In a simple average, all assignments carry the exact same value. You add your scores together and divide by the number of assignments:
Average = Sum of Grades / Total Count
2. Weighted Grade Average
In a weighted average, different categories carry different importance weights (e.g. Tests = 50%, Homework = 20%). The category grades are multiplied by their weight, added together, and divided by the total weight:
Weighted Average = ∑(Grade × Weight) / ∑(Weights)

What is Grade Calculation?
Grade Calculation is the fundamental process used by educators to evaluate a student's academic performance. It converts raw points from quizzes, essays, and exams into standardized percentages and letter grades.
How It Works (Formula)
Most modern classes use a "Weighted Grading" system rather than a simple point accumulation system. In weighted grading, a 100% on a homework assignment might only contribute 10% to your final grade, while a 90% on a Midterm might contribute 30%.
$$ \text{Grade} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (\text{Score}_i \times \text{Weight}_i) $$
The statistical formula for a weighted arithmetic mean.
How to Use It
To calculate your grade manually, multiply the percentage score of each assignment by its decimal weight (e.g., an 80% score worth 20% weight is $80 \times 0.20 = 16$). Add all these weighted numbers together to get your final class percentage.
