Weighted vs. Unweighted High School GPA
High schools often use two different GPA metrics to represent student performance. Understanding the differences is key to evaluating college application strengths.
Unweighted GPA
An **Unweighted GPA** is calculated on a standard 4.0 scale regardless of class difficulty. An 'A' in AP Chemistry and an 'A' in elective pottery both receive exactly 4.0 points. The maximum unweighted GPA possible is 4.00.
Weighted GPA
A **Weighted GPA** reflects the difficulty of courses on your transcript. This scale gives extra GPA weight to advanced courses to reward academic rigor. Typically, AP (Advanced Placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate) classes receive an extra 1.0 point, and Honors classes receive an extra 0.5 point. Thus, getting an 'A' in an AP class gives you 5.0 grade points.
What is the High School GPA Calculator?
The High School GPA Calculator tracks academic progress for secondary students aiming for college admissions. Crucially, it supports "Weighted GPA" scales, which award extra points for difficult AP, IB, and Honors courses.
How It Works (Algorithm)
While standard classes use a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0), weighted classes use a 5.0 scale. An 'A' in an AP class is worth 5.0 points, and a 'B' is worth 4.0 points. The calculator adjusts the point values based on class type before averaging them.
$$ \text{AP/Honors Bonus} = \text{Standard Grade Point} + 1.0 $$
The standard weighted logic used by High School admissions.
How to Use It
List your semester classes. Select your letter grade, input the credits (usually 1.0 or 0.5), and use the dropdown to specify if the class was Regular, Honors, or AP. The calculator will instantly output both your Unweighted and Weighted GPA.
